Lonar Crater Lake Development Gets a Boost with ₹91.29 Crore Sanction
The Maharashtra government has approved a substantial funding of ₹91.29 crore for the holistic
development of Lonar Crater Lake, located in the Buldhana district. This initiative aims to upgrade the
region’s tourism infrastructure, restore and conserve historic and geological features, enhance visitor
amenities, and support the site’s bid for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Lonar Lake—also known as the Lonar Crater—is a rare and unique geological formation created by a
meteorite impact approximately 52,000 ± 6,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. It is one of only
four known hyper-velocity impact craters in basaltic rock anywhere on Earth, making it a site of immense
scientific and ecological importance. The lake is both saline and alkaline, with a distinctive green hue
caused by the presence of specific micro-organisms and algae.
Located about 79 km from Buldhana city, this natural marvel is already a notified National Geo-heritage
Monument by the Geological Survey of India. The crater is surrounded by ancient temples and historical
ruins, adding cultural significance to its geological wonder.
